The foundation of this technique, and the introduction of Meisner's Repetition exercise. You will learn to keep your attention fully on another person and respond from a place of genuine authenticity.

Module Two02

Into the Given Circumstances

The work gets up on its feet. Here, we will explore the actor's impulse live and in person. We will also explore embodying the work, through detailed scenarios, and the deepening of your work through Emotional Preparation.

Module Three03

Into the Text

Two actors working with scripts while another watches

Taking the freedom we have found and applying it to a script. We go from first read to scenes on their feet, via a revolutionary way to approach text analysis.

How the course is built

Meisner's training works in a particularly wonderful order. Each exercise is practised until it becomes habit, and the next one is added on top of it. Layering up to a robust and resilient craft. Meisner's Repetition comes first because it deals with the two problems most actors bring into the room: 1) not really listening, and 2) self consciousness. The course follows that order closely.

Groups are purposefully small, and everyone gets individual feedback.

About the online module

There are two strong positions on teaching Meisner online. One says it can't be done. The other sells full training over a screen as though nothing is lost. I don't exactly agree with either.

Repetition does work well online, in a well-run room. Some people find it more illuminating and exposing than a room. What a screen can't give you is a shared physical space which is why Modules Two and Three are in-person, in Leeds. Eight weeks online is the first part of a Meisner training, and that's how I describe it.

Sessions are recorded so the course runs continuously. Only your group can watch them.

Questions

Is this the whole of Meisner training?

No. A full Meisner training usually runs over two years. This course covers the foundations properly and in order, and it's the groundwork for longer training, which I'm developing now.

What if I can't get to Leeds?

Module One stands on its own. The weekends run twice a year, so you can come to Leeds when it suits you. If there's demand elsewhere in the north, I'll look at other cities. Just get in touch.

I've trained in Meisner before. Can I start at Module Two?

Possibly. Email me with where you trained and who with and we can discuss your suitability for advanced class work.

Can I pay for all three modules at once?

Not at the moment. Each module is booked separately.

How often does it run?

Module One four times a year. Each weekend twice a year, timed so you're not waiting long after finishing a module.

What comes after?

The Monthly Technique Class and Character and Scene Study are there for continued training. The course is also the route into the Teaching Certification, coming soon.
